Academic English I~IV

Academic English I and II: Academic Presentation

Cross Boundary Innovation first year students (batch of 2014) are focusing on academic presentations in this course English I and II. This course is a combined class with the Institute for Academic Initiatives Group 5 (RESPECT Program) and consists of 14 students (CBI: 7, RESPECT: 7). The classes were divided into three levels (advanced, intermediate, basic) based on a written placement test. They are held on Fridays in the first period at the Center of Medical Innovation and Translational Research and School of Human Sciences.

aee_img01 The purpose of this course is to give students a chance to expand on their presentation skills in order to a) create, design and organize contents, and to b) develop delivery skills to perform well. In addition, the course helps students to effectively participate in discussions with audiences.

The contents of the course are based on short lectures and practice activities that help students through step-by-step stages in order to practice delivery and discussion strategies, logically organize content, defend arguments, and effectively design the contents of slides.

Students are encouraged to actively participate in class activities and discussions to enhance in-class learner engagement as the class follows learner-centered approaches. Students have to think, evaluate, and analyze contents of the class along with the instructor and classmates. This year the combined English course has special significance as the students of CBI and RESPECT with varying disciplinary backgrounds get the opportunity to interact and learn from each other.

The learning outcomes of the course are as follows: aee_img04The students are making steady progress in the class and we hope to achieve the desired learning outcomes by the end of the semester.

Academic English III and IV: Academic Writing

Cross Boundary Innovation second year students (batch of 2013) are focusing on academic writing in English III and IV. This is a combined class with Institute for Academic Initiatives Group 5 (RESPECT Program) and consists of 10 students (CBI: 4, RESPECT: 6). The classes were divided into three levels (advanced, intermediate, basic) based on a written placement test. They are held on Fridays in the second period at Center of Medical Innovation and Translational Research and School of Human Sciences.

The purpose of this course is to give students a chance to expand on their writing skills in order to a) better express themselves in academic writing assignments, b) effectively read academic papers and analyze them, and c) develop critical thinking approaches.

The content of the course focuses on the process of organizing their writing in a formal structure, presenting underlying theories and ideas in order, and supporting references by author citations.

Students are encouraged to actively participate in class activities and discussion to enhance in-class learner engagement as the class follows learner-centered approaches. Students have to think, evaluate, and analyze contents of the class along with the instructor and classmates. This year combined English course has special significance as the students of CBI and RESPECT with varying disciplinary backgrounds get the opportunity to interact and learn from each other.
